CAF Champions League: Group Stages and Knockout Ties

Identify the stage first

Check whether the match is in a group or a knockout tie. In groups, points and tie-breakers affect qualification; in two-leg ties, the aggregate score matters. Consult the current competition rules for tie-breaks.

Separate aggregate score from match score

If a team loses the first leg 2–0 and wins the return leg 1–0, it still trails 2–1 on aggregate. Record each match score separately from the aggregate.

Use travel and squad information carefully

Check the travel schedule, confirmed line-up and reported absences. A long journey alone does not establish fatigue, and a missing player in a photograph does not confirm an injury.

Before kick-off

Confirm the stage, any first-leg score, kick-off time and line-ups. Use CAF’s competition information and dated club announcements.

Questions and answers

Can a team win the second leg and still be eliminated?

Yes. A win on the night may not be enough to overcome the deficit from the first leg.

Where are tie-break rules listed?

Consult the current CAF competition regulations.

What is an aggregate score?

It combines a team’s goals across both legs of a tie. A result from one leg alone does not show the final outcome.

Should group-stage and knockout results be read the same way?

No. Group matches contribute to a table, while knockout matches decide progression through a tie. Check the stage before comparing results.
